Karen Witemeyer is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her novels have a way of grabbing a hold of your heart and not letting you go until you turn the last page. She has the uncanny ability of combining the Old West with romance and comedy. “Short-Straw Bride” has earned itself a spot on my “favorites” shelf, along with another of Witemeyer’s novel “Head in the Clouds”.

Meredith Hayes, a lovable, although slightly naïve woman, sets out to pay back a favor that she had been granted by the head of the reclusive Archer clan, Travis. She learns of a plot to destroy his property, so desperately she flees to the Archer ranch to put them on alert. Only now, she’s become a liability to the brothers and they force her to stay until they rid their land of those trying to destroy it. Meredith, who can’t stand around idle, sparks into action to help save their barn, which is soon engulfed in flames. During her rescue attempt, she suffers a head injury, rendering her unconscious and unable to travel on horseback to return to her ranch. The Archer brothers have no choice: she must stay with them while she recovers.

However, this choice has now sullied Meredith’s reputation in the eyes of her uncle, who forces one of the Archer’s to take her hand in marriage. He doesn’t care who, just as long as he’s an Archer and agrees to wed her the next day. After much deliberation and some trickery, Travis winds up as the “lucky” man who gets to call Meredith his wife.

Fortunately for Meredith, she has secretly been in love with Travis since he saved her that one day 12 years ago, but feels that he’s married her only out of obligation. Travis, who is instantly attracted to this feisty blond, worries that she only married him because she had no other choice. Will they be able to learn to trust and confide their true feelings to each other when it matters most??

Karen Witemeyer is superb at composing endearing characters that are realistic, honest and lovable. Her books are always a joy to read and are consistently well written. You always know what you’re getting when you pick up one of Karen’s novels: a fantastic historical romance that will captivate you from the first page to the last.
