What do you get when you mix a debut novel, a new author and a relatively new publisher?  Absolute success!  That is, if you’re talking about Wedded to War by Jocelyn Green.  This novel is not for the faint of heart, but for those that enjoy immersing themselves into the history of our country during one of its most tumultuous times.  Jocelyn Green has proved herself as a thorough and talented author with this debut novel.

Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Charlotte Waverly, a self-proclaimed spinster and lady of New York society, decides that she can no longer be idle as her beloved country falls apart around her.  She volunteers to be trained as an army nurse under Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to ever receive her medical degree.  At the time, women in the medical profession were unprecedented and were seen as a nuisance rather than a help.  Throughout the novel, Charlotte proves herself an amiable and tough nurse, who graciously handles situations that would make any normal person’s stomach curl.  Charlotte must learn to trust on the sovereignty of God and the purpose that he has set forth in her life.

Wedded to War’s heroine, Charlotte Waverly, is based on a real life American hero and pioneer of women’s nursing, Georgeanna Woolsey.  While the vast majority of the text is fictionalized, it is based on true events that occurred during our country’s Civil War.  This was before the standards of the American Red Cross had been developed and the country was painfully learning that it’s missteps and mismanagement not only wasted federal dollars but also wasted the lives of thousands of young soldiers.   In the novel and in real life, the efforts of Woolsey and Waverly are priceless when you consider the amount of lives throughout the years that have been saved because of them.  When you’re finished with the novel, you’re greeted with an educational section called “The History Behind the Story”.  I LOVE it when the author includes these.  Not only does it provide me, the reader, with a more in-depth knowledge and comprehension of what I just read, but it proves to me that the author took time to research and really “get to know” the historical figures.

I REALLY loved this novel and was excited to see that it is Book 1 in the Heroines Behind the Lines series However, I have to wait until April 2013 for the next to release!  Jocelyn Green is a new author to watch!
