An allegory of the Biblical book of Ruth, “Sixty Acres and a Bride” is Regina Jennings’ first published novel.  I’ve found that most of the time new authors have to somehow find their rhythm with their writing, and it’s usually evident in their first book that it’s not quite “all there yet”.  This was NOT the case with “Sixty Acres and a Bride”.  Regina Jennings’ composes her first novel like a seasoned pro.

Rosa Garner, a beautiful, young Mexican woman, travels to Texas with her American mother-in-law, Louise.  Both recently widowed during an earthquake, the penniless women travel to Louise’s former ranch in Texas with hopes of a better life.   Instead of the freedom and renewal they sought, they find themselves handed a large tax bill, and if left unpaid in three months time, they will lose everything.   There is only one man that can save them from destitution: Weston Garner, a wealthy rancher and Louise’s nephew.

What I loved most about this book was that it gave me a glimpse into what must have been going through Ruth’s mind when she approached Boaz with her desperate need.  The complete and utter vulnerability and shaky uncertainty that she experienced is why there is a book in the Bible solely dedicated to her.

“Sixty Acres and a Bride” is a beautiful story that deserves to be read.  I’m looking forward to more novels by Regina Jennings in the future.  She is now on my “authors to watch” list.

I was provided a free copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.
